Hydrochloric acid is a colorless liquid with a sharp, irritating , pungent odor. Hydrogen chloride is in common synonym for hydrochloric acid. Its molecular weight is 36.47 gr/mol.
Hydrochloric acid is very soluble in water and has many different industrial uses such as production of chloride fertilizers , dyes, photographic producing of textile and in rubber industries . This is one of the most corrosive material. Short term exposure with the acid and its vapor may causes poison. Hydrochloric acid is highly corrosive to most common metals so should be kept in specific tanks.
Hydrochloric acid was discovered by the chemist Jaber Ibn Haiyan around the year 800 AD. Its historical names were acidum Salis, muriatic acid, and spirits of salt.
With major production in the industrial revolution, this acid was used in the chemical industries as a chemical reagent in the huge amount of vinyl chloride for PVC plastic and producing TDI and MDI polyurethane production process.
There are many other applications including household cleaning, production of gelatin, and other food additives , in leather processing, in mythology, to prepare metal surface appropriate for galvanic coating.
